6 Houseplants for Keeping Insects out of Your Home

We get it, it’s hot outside. And if we were a bug, you better believe we’d be doing everything we could to get inside a nice, air-conditioned house.

Bugs are simply a part of life, and sooner or later, one or more of them is going to make their way inside. But before you break out the potentially harmful big guns, consider incorporating one of these houseplants into your décor. Trust us, bug management never looked (or smelled) this good.

From kitchen-friendly herbs like basil and sage, to no-brainers like the Venus flytrap, scroll down for six houseplants which serve as natural bug repellants, courtesy of House Beautiful:

Basil

The popular herb has been used for pest control since for thousands of years, due to its strong aroma and oil. Bonus: you can use it for cooking too!

Lavender

This sweet-smelling beauty is said to repel flies, beetles, and even fleas.

Rosemary

Another kitchen favorite, rosemary’s intense fragrance is good for repelling gnats and fruit flies.

Sage

Sage is particularly effective for outdoor use and can be used to ward off mosquitoes and flies.

Marigold

They look good, smell good, and repel flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. What more could you want?

Venus Flytraps

Arguably the least attractive plant on the list, Venus flytraps are a no brainer when it comes to pest control. These carnivorous plants move quickly to trap and eat beetles and spiders.
